The construction of Villa Pisani at Bagnolo, initiated in 1542, marked a turning point in the career of the young Andrea Palladio. The brothers Vettore, Marco and Daniele Pisani were members of the Venetian aristocratic élite, which meant that Palladio had made an important breakthrough in terms of patronage. Palladio's ambitious goal was to build a country residence that would satisfy the Pisani brothers’ rather refined tastes and, at the same time, be capable of providing a tangible and rational solution in terms of the organization of the entire complex of agricultural annexes. Within a general, unified plan, Palladio included the main house, the animal sheds, the barchesse and the dovecotes, elements which in the fifteenth-century villa had faced the courtyard in a sort of casual disarray, with no functional or formal link. At the same time, the practical necessities of rural and agricultural life were addressed in an innovative manner, with the introduction of original forms and a new ‘language’ inspired by classical architecture.
