If we consider the Palladian villa as evidence of a new concept, whereby the practical necessities of rural life and agricultural activities are addressed in original architectural forms and a new ‘language’ inspired by classical architecture, we find that the innovative trend undoubtedly attains a hitherto unseen architectural synthesis in Villa Emo. Palladio built this villa, which appears to have been completed by 1558, for Leonardo Emo, whose family had owned an estate at Fanzolo since the mid-1400s. The composition of the complex is ‘hierarchical’ and is dominated by the prominent structure of the home of the owner of the property, which is ‘raised’ on a base section and connected to the ground level by a long stone ramp. At the sides, the two rectilinear, symmetrical wings of barchesse end with a dovecote tower. In this work, Palladio chose the simple Doric order, and the windows of the building have no cornices. The ‘stereometric’ logic of the exterior is moreover contrasted by the extraordinary quality of interior decoration produced by Battista Zelotti.
